Phyllis A. Melton

January 18, 1928 — February 22, 2017

Phyllis A. Melton
Phyllis A. Melton, 89, of Dunbar, formerly of Charleston's West Side, passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning, February 22, 2017.
She was born January 18, 1928, in Charleston, to the late Cecil and Anna Harkins Legg.
In addition to her parents, Phyllis was preceded in death by her one and only love and husband of 67 1/2 years, Russell W. Melton. Also preceding her was her brother, Harold Legg, and sisters, Wilma Jordan and Dorothy Spradling.
Phyllis was of the Baptist faith and loved listening to gospel music..
Left to cherish Phyllis' memory is her two children, daughter, Diane S. Melton; son, Jerry "Mike" Melton and his wife Jeanann; two grandsons who lit up her life, Michael Shawn Melton and Matthew Aaron Melton; two sisters, Emogene Teetor and Joyce "Sue" McGraw, and many nieces and nephews.
She was a stay at home wife and mother until the children went to school and she then decided to take on selling Avon in the neighborhood and a part time job with the Kanawha County Board of Education. At Christmas time, she would work in the toy department at O.J. Morrison’s where she loved to meet people and enjoyed all the children that came in.
In her younger years, she loved to bowl and did so in several leagures. She was especially proud of her four member "family" team which consisted of her, her husband and two children. She always got a big smile when the other teams would laugh and say they were going to quit the league for they were tired of the Melton Team winning all the time. She loved to travel and sightsee with Tennessee being her favorite state to visit.
Visitation will be held from 1 at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, February 25, at Elk Funeral Home on Charleston’s West Side with funeral service beginning at 2:30 p.m. with Pastor Roger Mullins officiating. Burial will follow at a later date in Elk Hills Memorial Park where she will be laid to rest next to her husband.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in our Mother's memory to Hospice of Kanawha Valley or a charity of choice.
The family would like to thank the caregivers that assisted with Mother's care while at home and also thank all the staff at Valley Center for the care they gave during her brief stay with them.
